Leadership is an art - book notes

The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between the two the leader must become a servant and a debtor.

The measure of leadership is not in the quality of the head but in the tone of the body – the signs of leadership appear primarily amongst the followers and in the teams.

To be a leader means especially having the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who permit leaders to lead.

Justice Olive Wendell Holmes – I would not give a fig for simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give me life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity.

Leaders clarify the responsibility of each member of the group but recognize and give space to the rights of members of that group, the right to affect one’s own destiny, the right to be accountable, the right to appeal and the right to make a commitment.

3-key elements in the art of working together are how to deal with change, how to deal with conflict and how to reach our potential.

We must become for all who are involved a place of realized potential.

In the end it is important to remember we cannot become what we need to by remaining what we are.
