FOUNDATIONS OF BUSINESS SUCCESS

Leadership

Teams

Culture

Three of the crucial foundations of scale aren’t financial.

They’re human

Sustainable, scalable success hinges on the quality of your leaders, your teamwork and your culture. Getting this right provides a foundation for winning and a stand-out competitive advantage.

Leaders Are Made

The opportunity

Fundamentally leadership is a skill. Whatever our baseline aptitude, it is likely we are nowhere near our potential. As organisations scale, leadership is often accidental – defaulting to functional experts who pick up leadership and management responsibilities as the teams grow.

We hope that experience and a process of trial and error will fill in the gaps.

Unfortunately, experience is a slow and haphazard tutor. You don’t have time, and this is too important to leave to chance.

How we use it

Our role is to help you develop the mindset, tools and approach to do this. This means learning to pay attention to – and practice – the fundamentals of what leaders actually do – make decisions, communicate, and build and sustain the culture.

We focus primarily on what effective practice looks like within the constraints of your work environment. Most leadership programmes teach you a lot about leadership, but theory is overvalued.

We don’t teach our children to swim by giving them books or showing them presentations. We put them in the water.

Leadership is practical – you have to do it, with a team in pursuit of a shared objective. Getting better at it means operating outside your comfort zone, with specific granular intention and access to expert feedback that you can digest and apply in the next repetition, and the next, and the next.

‘The truth is that no one factor makes a company admirable. But if you were to pick the one that makes the most difference, you’d pick leadership’.

Teams Are Built

The opportunity

Recruiting talent and putting it in the same room with a mission is not the same as forming a high-performance team. That’s an approach based in hope and a recipe that is extremely unlikely to get you anything more than average.

In the same way that the parts of an engine laid out together are useless, so too are the individual parts of a team. Putting them together is an engineering challenge to design and build. Teams that are left to self-assemble are beset with predictable frictions that hold them back, limit performance and make it highly unlikely you will get more than the sum of the parts.

But this is where the opportunity lies.

How we use it

In almost every business, teamwork is fundamentally the mechanism by which we deliver our products or services yet it’s often neglected.

We help you develop effective higher performing teams at pace so that teams and teamwork become a crucial part of your competitive super-power. Whether you rely on stable long-term teams or ad hoc short duration project or mission teams, we can help you equip your leaders with the skills and tools to build teams quickly and at scale.

This may include use of a unique in-house technology platform with applications for supporting accelerated team development, personality psychometrics and culture evaluation. These tools allow us to collate and visualise data to generate key insights and provide clients with tools and handrails for ongoing tracking, monitoring and performance development.

‘Not finance, not strategy. Not technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and rare’.

Culture Will Be

The opportunity

Organisational culture is nothing more than what happens when everyone turns up to work and begins to interact. It’s an accumulation of social behaviours in turn influenced by leaders, others in the group, the work you do and the meaning that work has.

Every organisation has a culture. Very few organisations are deliberate about how they design, nurture and maintain that culture. Most can articulate what they would like their culture to be, but this ethos often doesn’t align to the culture they have.

In a high growth business enshrining, protecting and promulgating the culture you want becomes a crucial leadership opportunity.

How we use it

What was once easy when you started out with a band of like-minded evangelists, who likely shared the same values goals and approach is increasingly challenging. At this stage, it’s crucial to move from a tacit understanding of your culture.

You have to be able to codify it and weave it into the DNA of your business to build trust.

Not with a poster or some slogans but in a powerful and meaningful way where shared values guide action and provide meaning, connection and purpose.

“When the culture is strong it becomes a super-power, enabling and encouraging all the key behaviours that shape and drive your organisational and team performance.”
